"What is human?"
"Nothing but a being of malice and misery."
Once considered one of the four pillars of Visual Kei (ヴィジュアル系), MALICE MIZER is a Japanese rock band active from 1992 to 2001.
After the disbandment of their previous band, Matenrou (摩天楼), in early 1992, Mana and Közi formed a new band together in August 1992. Faced with the question “What is human?” to which their response was “Nothing but a being of malice and misery," their name is a portmanteau of malice and misery, and their concept revolves around this idea.
Inspired by classical music and Italian horror soundtracks, the pair sought to create a twin guitar sound and recruited vocalist Tetsu, bassist Yu〜ki, and drummer Gaz to complete their line-up. Mana started his own label, Midi:Nette, to release their music. This lineup, however, was short-lived, as drummer Gaz soon left in March 1993, and Kami joined two days later. The two drummers “swapped” bands and coincidentally shared the same birthday.
In 1994, the other members expressed a desire to pursue a more visual direction for the band. Tetsu didn't agree and subsequently left in December. As a result, Gackt joined as the new vocalist in October 1995, after being discovered by Yu~ki. After releasing a full-length album, they signed with the major record label Nippon Columbia in 1997, and with Gackt as their new vocalist, the band was at their peak stardom. But this, too, was short-lived. On New Year’s 1999, Gackt left to pursue a solo career, leaving the remaining members to continue as a quartet again. However, tragedy struck when Kami died in June of the same year. As a trio, they continued to release both instrumental and vocal music using their own voices, albeit distorted. Occasionally, they recruited Khala as a guest, who later officially became their third and final vocalist in August 2000.
Throughout the band’s nine-year history, they went through multiple line-up, musical, and visual changes. With vocalist Tetsu, they had a baroque sound that evolved into French pop and became renowned for their extravagant theatrics after Gackt joined. Gackt’s departure and Kami’s death half a year later created a somber mood, and their sound evolved to a more gothic one that continued even after Khala became their third and final vocalist until their indefinite hiatus in December 2001.
